A 17 year old girl is sent to an eating disorder treatment center in New Mexico. Her father sends her, giving her only 8 hours to prepare herself and get her stuff together and packed. Ever since her brother's death, Stevie had been starving herself and preparing to “sacrifice” herself because she convinced it was her fault for the death.
The chapters are counting the days she has been in the center. In the beginning the author makes it clear that Stevie wants to end her life on the 1 year anniversary of her brothers death, which was in 27 days.
In the treatment center Stevie refuses help, runs away, and makes friends.
Flashbacks occur regularly in the book back to memories of her brother, both good and bad.
Eden, Stevies best/only friend was said to be a bad influence on her. Eden had ended up having a fling with Stevie, as well has Stevie's brother. Stevie knew Eden was dating her brother but continued to be with her. When Joshua found out about his sister and girlfriends thing, it caused an argument in the car, which later caused a car crash, killing Josh and leaving Stevie with a scar in her leg.
I enjoyed reading this book because I found it relatable in a way.
My friend Conner had an eating disorder and he would always want to be skinnier. Body image effects most people in this generation, as well as comparing.
Conners boyfriend was naturally very skinny and I know Conner would always get down because of comparing himself to Morgan. In paperweight, Stevie always compared herself to the other anorexic girl in her cabin and would try to get skinnier than her. Even though she had a plan to kill herself, she still wanted to be the as skinny as possible.
Another way I somewhat connected because of the death in it. Conner had died last april. When it happened I looked for something to blame. I thought it was my fault in a way. I know I didn't cause his death but I longed for a reason to explain why it happened. When this had happened in the book, Stevie started off by blaming herself, and then started blaming Eden. She turned to alcohol and started starving her. I turned to isolation and busying myself with volleyball. Everyone has their own ways to cope.
